![]() The Artist: Tage SpragueTage’s work ranges from finely casted naturalistic sculptures such as his “Trojan Horse” to surreal mechanical pieces formed by found mechanical objects-- thrown away computer parts, the insides of a car, outsides of a motorcycle, and metallic cast away parts he welds into new form. His 2010 artwork included the construction of a mechanical chair that responds to the sitter’s heart rate and energy. Tage combines science with art as a matter of everyday work and through the use of robotics, has begun “breathing life” into these sculptures.
A self-taught artist Sprague says art is the expression of spirit, and as a Saratoga, New York native born to an equestrian family, Sprague deeply understands the greatness of the horse. "Trojan horse" is comprised of fourteen castings that Tage assembled and chased to completion. “The Trojan Horse is not capturable, no matter the angle you view the horse-- the reflected light moving in the intricacies of the sculpted metal entrances with its ever-changing forms," says Sprague.
Sprague's commitment to the spiritual intensity of his art is apparent, for unlike many, Sprague performs all of the phases in the creation of a piece whether it be a bronze sculpture or robotic artwork: from refining the metals and wiring the circuits, clay modeling, mold making and pouring wax, to casting and finishing high-polished bronze metal.
His work has been seen in galleries throughout Saratoga Springs and Little Falls. In New York City, Tage has also worked as a special effects make-up artist casting the likeness of actors such as John Amos and the musical band “Kiss” for feature films and concerts.
