Summer Youth Acting Workshop
A workshop for youth presented by Image Quilt Productions

Session 1: July 11- 30 Alchemizing through Acting
During the course of this workshop with Kat Katsanis, participants will be introduced to basic approaches to acting and playwriting. Each class will begin with a structured warm-up with daily variations and end with a short resting period with energy work. Instruction will be given in method acting, Meisner technique and improvisation. Students will learn basic play structured, as devised by Aristotle, as well as current forms of performance art making. The playwriting aspect of the class will be partly comprised of guided writing exercises, in which each students' imagination is asked to be fully present. Course objectives include preparing a one-minute comedic or dramatic monologue which may be performed. The class will be a fun, dynamic introduction to acting.

Session 2: August 1-19 Making a Play
During the course of this workshop with Omonike Akinyemi, the participants of Alchemizing through Acting and new students will have the opportunity to develop their own play, a unique production comprised of their own monologues and scene improvisation. The students will develop their own set and costumes. Instruction on how to direct one another in scenes from the play will be given. Friends and family are invited to a performance at the end of the summer.

About the Instructors:
Kat Katsanis is a graduate of the San Diego School of Creative and Performing Arts and Sarah Lawrence College. She is now immersed in graduate studies in playwriting and performance at New York University's Gallatin School. Kat's play Last Words found its premiere at Sarah Lawrence's Workshop Theater, The Perfect Argument premiered at Oxford University's Moser Playhouse, and her most recent work, Mother Speaks, was read by herself and Dani Snyder at LaMama, NYC. Kat has shared her poems and performance work as featured reader at Claire De Lune in San Diego and as featured performer at Tisch School of the Arts. Currently, she is drafting a new play, Chocolate Baklava, which will be defended spring 2005 as her graduate thesis. Kat combines her gifts as an intuitive healer and reiki practitioner with her love for honing creative potential through authentic movement, extended vocal technique and improvisational writing.

Omonike Akinyemi is a film and theater director. Upon graduation from the MFA film production program at the University of Southern California School of Cinema-Television, Omonike was awarded a Princess Grace Foundation honorarium to direct the 1-hour drama, “Nelly’s Bodega”.
“Nelly’s Bodega” , has won the 2004 “Best Drama” Award at the Women of Color Film Festival. It was also screened in The Forum at the 2000 Cannes Film Festival and aired on PBS (WNET/Channel 13). The film has become a part of the Albany Public Library permanent collection. Omonike directed the plays “Closer” and “Eleemosynary” while working with the Bilingual Actor’s Workshop, where she became known as an “Actor’s Director”. Omonike is now developing her first feature film, “How to Stay Sane in Paris”.
